Social Networking Sites: A User Perspective on Privacy

Abstract

Since the emergence of Social Networking Sites (SNSs), privacy risks have been in the spotlight of public attention. Critics link participation on SNSs to organizational threats such as information collection, aggregation and use by marketing, insurance, HR agencies and other third parties, as well as to dangers stemming from the user’s social environment, including online stalking and bullying. However, despite the presence of these imminent threats, users readily reveal striking amounts of information on SNSs. Bewildered by these dynamics, many wonder about the rationale behind user sharing behavior. Which mechanisms motivate this overwhelming amount of information sharing? Are users concerned about their privacy and if so, to what extent? Who in particular do they fear? Do users rely on a given legal framework when self-disclosing? Building on the results of numerous surveys, interviews and focus groups with SNS users as well as previous theoretical insights, the goal of this talk is to shed light on these problematic areas of user privacy behavior.
